How to Provide Excellent Customer Services

Small businesses run on their customers. Excellent customer service creates loyal customers, and loyal customers refer their friends, family, and peers to your business. Providing that kind of service takes a genuine desire to do it — it’s about the whole experience a customer has with your business, not just the sale. Here are a few tips to help you provide excellent customer service.

First Thing: A Greeting

Customer service starts with a greeting, whether you’re on the phone or a customer just walked into your store. It’s the first impression a customer has of your business, and first impressions go a long way. Customers don’t want to deal with employees or owners who are pushy or rude — they want the interaction to be smooth, easy, and cordial.

Know What You’re Selling

As an employee or owner, know your business’s product or service inside and out. Be ready for the common questions customers will ask. Customers feel comfortable buying from a business that clearly knows what it’s talking about — and they leave satisfied knowing they got the best service or product possible.

Listen

Not every customer you help will be easygoing and happy. Some days bring difficult problems and difficult people — however frustrating, listen. Hear what customers are saying and try to make the situation right. Nothing looks worse than responding only to the happy customers and ignoring the ones with complaints. Show reliability and respect: every business, including yours, makes mistakes sometimes.

Use the Feedback You Receive

Regularly review the feedback you get from customers. Take time to identify what needs improvement and where your strengths already are. Train employees to work on the weak spots and recognize them for the strengths. The best way to improve your business is to actually act on the feedback customers take the time to give you.
